…but last week it was.. We went on our annual trip to Las Vegas, Los Angeles, San Diego and went for a quick stop in Laguna Beach.. ahhhh bliss…

We drove a lot, saw Drive, fed chipmunks, went to Disneyland and the Zoo, ate doughnuts, drank Cactus Coolers, soaked up the sun and relaxed… The music from Drive and Malk De Koijns Toback To The Fromtime along with a lot of 60′s psychedelic music pretty much made the soundtrack for our whole trip. Now all I wanna do is go back and drive some more.

Recently, I visited Africa for the first time in my life. I went to Nairobi, Kenya where I spent seven days to record young rappers and singers from East Africa’s largest slum Kibera. With only a handheld audio recorder, a pair of headphones and my camera, I went exploring in the extremely poor and even hostile area.

I met this young guy called Jahill that spends his days on the local radio station and has a crew called Jah Army. With him by my side, I met some other young vocalists and the recordings began.

I went back to Copenhagen with all the raw audio recordings, and in collaboration with some of Denmarks best Djs/Producers we created this mix for you to download and share. All this is an active move towards a better future for the youth in Kenya.

The third stop on our tour was the great city of dreams LA. No more vacation time, this part of the trip was strictly work. Camilla Jane Lea and William Frederiksen my partners in crime had also flown to LA to meet up with me. Together with them I do the annual CPH PRO, which is a professional skateboard competition that we host in Copenhagen. This year is our 5th year and the competition have grown to be the biggest skate comp in Europe. We have gone to California every year prior to the contest to promote, mingle and hype the contest and every year we have come home with our bag full of new contact, tricks and ideas how to make the cph pro the best contest possible. This year our mission was to interview high profile skaters about what it means to skate contest, why and why not contest are important and what it takes to host the greatest show on earth.

On the first day in La, I wanted to do some b-rolls for the interviews and we went around downtown LA and did a couple of timelapse. We ended up on this Bridge, which has been in ton of Hollywood movies. I wanted to test out my new toy the Philip Bloom signature kessler pocket dolly and the Oracle controller and motor. I wanted to make the camera go from one side of the sign and then past the sign, so you could see LA downtown in the background. It’s always hard doing timelapse of sunsets with the dolly. Because you need to take your chance on that the camera goes the full length of the dolly before it gets to dark, it takes a lot of practice and I need to put in some serious hours before I can say that I got it dialed down to perfection. The camera only made it a little over half way before I felt that it was to dark and with my two assistances, best boy William and the security manager Camilla waiting on my timelapse to finished, there was only a take one on this one. If I had been there alone I would had gone for a take two…

First skater we hooked up with is our good friend Rune Glifberg, the king of skateboarding in Denmark. Rune is born just out side Copenhagen, but has lived as a professional skateboarder in Cali since 1994. When Rune does´t skate he likes to spend as much time as he can on his hobby, which is BMW´S and racing. He wanted us to go with him to racetrack to see and feel what it is all about. We though this sounded like a lot of fun and that it would be a great location for the interview. The race track, the surroundings and the wibe at the place was absolutely out of this world. I have never been to place like that and being in the car on the track was a joy ride I will never forget.

Again my new toy the Philip Bloom signature kessler pocket dolly and the Oracle controller and motor. came in to great effect, i used it to do silky smooth dolly moves…

————————————————————————————————————————

Next dude we did an interview with, was no other than Arto Saari. Arto is from Finland. He is now 29 and has lived in the states since he was 17. He is one of the greatest skaters that have rocked this planet. Arto has had some mind blowing video parts, which has made him into a legend and a big impact on skateboarding. We have been trying to get Arto to come to CPH PRO for the last couple of years and with a little luck and a promise to build him a sauna he might show up this year, but you never know. Arto recently got a little daughter and bought a house in Hollywood. With this in mind he knew that he would be spending more time at home with the family, so he made it simple for himself and build a backyard pool at his house. I had a hard time believing my own eyes. The house was this old French alp looking house with a backyard with pool, avocado and grapefruit trees and a proper sauna to chill out in after a little skate session and if that is not enough then out of nowhere Christian Hosoi rock’s up for a little skate session. Christian Hosoi is in my mind one of the biggest legends in the history of skateboarding.

Last day in LA we hooked up with Braydon Szafranski. Braydon is from Las Vegas, but lives in LA as professional skateboard. This guy is hilarious, he really makes me laugh. He is full of energy and just out of this world with his stories. He looks, talks and party more like a rock star, than a skater. He is the type of skater that you would think hates on contest. But he actually have too much positive blood in him to hate on anything, I really hope that this cat makes it out to Copenhagen this summer, cause I know that he would feel at home here….

Once again, i went down deep into my mountains of hard drives and found this little clip, that i think is pretty cool. It´s from a trip with the oslo ferry that goes from Copenhagen to Oslo and back. I used my old Canon 1014 XL-S super 8 mm camera, which can be set to do timelapse. Actually i have not used this camera for a very long time, i don´t think i used it since i bought my Canon 5d mark ll, i think the main reason is that i have spend every $ i made on new equipment and filming 8 mm is not cheap and it takes time to see and edit the final result. But when i see this stuff i fell like buying some films and getting that old camera up and running again. I have been into timelapse for a long time, but it was´t until i got the canon 5d mark ll that i really started to go all crazy about doing timelapse and i think the time has come to start playing with 8mm timelpase again…

Here is a couple of cool links if you want to get into the world of 8mm…

A couple of month´s ago, i went to Lebanon to do a little documentary on a project called Turntables in the Camp. I will post a trailer for the documentary before x-mas.

Turntables in the Camps is a project focused on the inclusion of young refugees in the global youth culture of DJ-ing and the creation of electronic music. To facilitate this the project conducts workshops and sets up permanent local dj schools for refugee boys and girls in order to show that everybody can be a DJ or an MC no matter where they are from. Turntables in the Camps was made to spread the means for musical creativity, break down boundaries and to creating a window to the world for marginalized refugee youth.

We had 12 day´s in Lebanon and Jordan to take care of our mission. It was hard to plan much from home. One being the language and of all the restrictions there is with filming in Lebanon and especially in the camps. So the plan was to go there and take it one day at the time and try and get the best out of it. This is differently not the optimal way to go about making a documentary, but that´s the card i had on my hand.

I knew that i had to pack light and leave a lot of the equipment in Denmark, cause there would be situations where we had to smuggle the camera gear into the camps and when we then where in the camps i had to stay as low key as possible. So i packed a Canon 7D and a Canon 550D, a 16-35mm 2,8 and a 24-70mm 2,8 canon glass, a mono pod, a microport, a zoom h4n sound recorder, one tripod and a small dolly.

It was a lot of running and gunning and all way´s keeping an eye out for the military, cause there is one thing you don´t want to get caught doing and that is filming the military, especially in the camps. On top of all that there is stuff going on, that you don´t talk about and most definitely don´t film either. so all in all, you need to think before you pul the camera out of the bag. This makes the filming process a lot harder, cause normally you focus on story, picture and sound… so all in all it was a learning full process about filming in tight and tense area´s and allway´s having one eye open to spot problems before they happen.

It was a adventure and a experince i will never forget, i saw another side of the world that i have never seen with my own eye´s. I met a lot of really open and friendly people and i was invited in with open arms where ever i went, you got to give em props for that, they live under the worst condition, i almost think that animals have better right here in Denmark than they do, but still they where all very positive, invited you in, served coffee, food and drinks. It was a very positive experience to see and feel that even doe everything seems like you are at the end of the road, you can still be friendly, positive and spread good karma…

I really tried to understand the whole situation and find out why it had gone so wrong. But it is an endless story and it´s really hard to point your fingers at the bad guy. But one thing i do know is that these people live a really ruff life and most of them don´t have a future, if they don´t leave, but then again would you want to run away and leave your whole family behind and on top of that not knowing if you would end up in jail in another country. I really hope that someday, they will find peace and be able to live a free life without all the restrictions they are living under now. For me the hope of them returning to Palestine, does´t really seem to be realistic hope, unless a miracle happens and i do wish for this.

Facts :

Lebanon

Around 425,000 refugees are registered with UNRWA in Lebanon, with many living in the country’s 12 refugee camps.

Palestine refugees make up an estimated ten per cent of Lebanon, a small country which is now densely populated.

Palestine refugees in Lebanon do not enjoy several basic human rights, for example, they do not have the right to work in as many as 20 professions. Palestine refugees are not formally citizens of another state, so they are not able to claim the same rights as other foreigners living and working in Lebanon.

Jordan

Around 1.9 million registered refugees live in Jordan.

All Palestine refugees in Jordan have full Jordanian citizenship with the exception of about 120,000 refugees originally from the Gaza Strip, which up to 1967 was administered by Egypt. They are eligible for temporary Jordanian passports, which do not entitle them to full citizenship rights such as the right to vote and employment with the government.

There are ten official and three unofficial camps, with other refugees living near the camps. They all live under similar socio-economic conditions.
